Field Trip to The Florence Griswold Museum

This Thursday we will be going on a field trip to The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, CT for an art field trip organized by our fabulous art teacher.  The students are so excited to see Miss Griswold's beautiful home that she opened up to the colony artists back in the 1900s but they are even more excited to see the special Wizard of Oz exhibit.  Miss Griswold housed many of the young colonist artists and as a result she has a special connection to Frank L. Baum and The Wizard of Oz.

The museum will have its own yellow brick road and has commissioned some of the original artwork for the first silent film version of the Wizard of Oz.
In the classroom, we are comparing Baum's 1900 novel to portions of the 1939 movie.  Baum's 1900 novel was the first American fairy tale.  We are looking at the elements of a fairy tale and studying the differences in components of a fairy tale in both the movie and the novel in preparation for our visit.  The students are so excited and are already noticing many differences.  Ask them about it!
